Co-Pilot Crashed Plane Deliberately – French Prosecutor

EPA FRANCE PLANE CRASH DIS TRANSPORT ACCIDENT FRA MA
A French prosecutor alleges that the co-pilot intentionally sent Germanwings Flight 9525 into its doomed descent. He is identified as German national Andreas Lubitz. VPC

The co-pilot of the Germanwings flight that crashed in the French Alps deliberately worked to destroy the plane while passengers shrieked in terror and the pilot pounded on the cockpit door, a French prosecutor said at a news conference Thursday in Marseille.

“This was voluntary, this was deliberate,” Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said. “He refused to open the cabin door in order to let the pilot back in. I repeat. He refused to let the pilot back in. He is the one who pressed the button that allowed the plane to begin descending and lose altitude.”

The information was obtained from the cockpit voice recorder of doomed Flight 9525, which suddenly began an eight-minute descent before smashing into a rugged ravine in the French Alps on Tuesday. The data recorder for the flight from Barcelona bound for Düsseldorf, Germany, has not yet been found.

Robin said the co-pilot, identified as German national Andreas Lubitz, 27, was not on a terror watch list. A federal law enforcement official told USA TODAY the FBI has been running the flight manifests through its databases but so far has found no connection to terrorism.

Lubitz said nothing during the descent, but could be heard breathing until the crash, Robin said.

“The co-pilot is the only one in the cockpit,’ Robin said. “While he is alone he somehow manipulated the buttons on the flight monitoring system. He was alone at the helm of this Airbus.”

Pilot Was Locked Out of Germanwings Cockpit Before Crash – NYT

Pilot Was Locked Out of Germanwings Cockpit Before Crash

ONE OF THE pilots of the Germanwings flight that crashed in the French Alps Tuesday morning was locked out of the cockpit as the plane went down, The New York Times reports. According to an investigator with evidence from the recovered cockpit voice recorder, the pilots’ conversation early in the flight was natural, and eventually one stepped out of the cockpit, then couldn’t get back in.

“The guy outside is knocking lightly on the door and there is no answer,” the investigator told the Times. “And then he hits the door stronger and no answer. There is never an answer.”

“You can hear he is trying to smash the door down.”

Government health agencies admit they were wrong about Cholesterol for 40+ years.

For four decades, the US government and other health organizations such as the American Heart Association have told us to limit dietary intake of cholesterol and to adopt a low fat diet. Cholesterol and fat, we were told, are dangerous to our heart health and must be minimized to prevent heart disease. Both of these positions are being overturned, in what can only be described as a stunning reversal. The Dietary Guidelines and Advisory Committee (DGAC), an independent advisory group, is dumping its low fat diet demands and is rescinding what was once considered dietary dogma, the low cholesterol diet.

What Has Brought About This Change?
The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC), meets every five years to make dietary recommendations to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Department of Health and Services (HHS). The committee is tasked with reviewing current nutritional research and making recommendations to the USDA. The final guidelines will be published later this year. Normally, the USDA follows the DGAC guidelines closely. If so, there are some sweeping changes being made to what we will be told to eat or not eat.

Cholesterol not the killer it’s touted to be, documentary says

A documentary about cholesterol and the medications that regulated called statins suggests that drugs are overprescribed and unnecessary for many

Drugs long thought to prevent heart attacks by lowering cholesterol do not provide a one-size-fits all solution, a new documentary suggests.

The Cholesterol Question, airing on CBC’s The Nature of Things Thursday Oct. 30, delves into the medications called statins; drugs that are among the most prescribed in the world.

It turns out a high cholesterol level doesn’t necessarily mean a heart attack or stroke is around the corner.

“There are far more powerful risk factors for developing plaque in the arteries,” says Dr. Barbara Roberts, a medical professor at Brown University, and director of the Women’s Cardiac Center at Miriam Hospital in Rhode Island.

Smoking, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, a sedentary lifestyle and strong family history of heart disease are far more significant, Roberts says. She has researched and treated lipid disorders since the 1970s and is an outspoken critic of widespread statin usage with her book The Truth about Statins: Risks and Alternatives to Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs.

“Cholesterol is a relatively weak risk factor,” Roberts says.

Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, himself a pilot, observed the ceremony at the company’s main base.

He said it was “a very emotional moment, to stand there with so many colleagues in uniform”.

Mr Spohr said the company’s first priority was helping the relatives of those who died.

He added it was “inexplicable for us, how an aeroplane in good mechanical condition, with two experienced, Lufthansa-trained pilots, could encounter such a tragedy from cruising altitude”.

Canada’s fight against Islamic State militants is entering a more complex and dangerous phase under a plan unveiled by Stephen Harper to expand air strikes to Syria.

The Conservative government has tabled a motion seeking the endorsement of the Commons for expanding the Iraq mission and extending the deployment by one year until the end of March, 2016.

Report: Ottawa Shooter’s Dad Appears to Have Been Rebel Fighter in Libya – Breitbart

The one radical that attacked the parliament building was the son of a immigration officer and her husband was a rebel fighter in Libya. Canada helped the rebels in Libya during the Gaddaffi conflict. Those funds helped the rebels, who later became emerged with ISIS. Our own dollars and cents probably helped radicalized Zehaf-Bibeau into attacking the parliament.

Spy accused of helping teens join ISIS claims he worked for Canadian intelligence – CBC

Spy accused of helping teens join ISIS claims he worked for Canadian intelligence

CBC News obtains Turkish intelligence report outlining Mohammad Al Rashed’s claims

Kadiza Sultana,16, left, Shamima Begum, 15, centre, and 15-year-old Amira Abase went to Syria through Turkey in February. A Syrian man accused of helping them join ISIS claims he has worked for Canadian intelligence, according to a Turkish report.

An accused spy detained in Turkey for allegedly helping three British girls join ISIS claims he worked for a Canadian intelligence agency, according to a Turkish intelligence report obtained by CBC News.

Mohammad Al Rashed, a Syrian who purportedly went by the alias Dr. Mehmet Resit, allegedly helped the girls cross from Turkey into Syria shortly after they flew from London to Istanbul on Feb. 17.

According to the intelligence report, Rashed accompanied the three teens —  two aged 15 and one 16 — on a bus to Gaziantep, a town near the Turkey-Syria border often used as a staging point by those looking to join ISIS. Rashed allegedly left the girls with “individuals involved in human trafficking” with the understanding they would be taken to Syria.

In a witness statement included in the report, Rashed claims he worked for Canadian intelligence and travelled occasionally to the Canadian Embassy in Jordan to share information he had gathered.

He claims he relayed information about his trip with the three British teens to Canadian intelligence on Feb. 21, and told Turkish authorities his ultimate goal was to obtain Canadian citizenship.

Rashed was detained on Feb. 28. According to the intelligence report, plane and bus tickets in the girls’ names were found in his possession, as well as video of the girls meeting the human traffickers and setting off for the Syrian border. Similarly, photos of passports and images of passport stamps for at least 20 other people were found in his possession.

The report also says Turkish authorities have screen shots of text messages Rashed sent to Canadian intelligence officials.

A Turkish news channel on Friday released a video, reportedly filmed by the man in question, in the border town of Gaziantep. The video shows a man with three girls.

“At points, you can hear the Syrian suspect telling the girls not to forget their bags. You can see him on camera, at points, as well,” CBC’s Nil Koksal reported from Istanbul.

The Turkish media outlet Dogan quoted Rashad as saying he had accompanied at least 25 foreign fighters so far to Gaziantep.

Syrian passport

Rashed purportedly entered Turkey 33 times using his Syrian passport and received multiple money wire transfers from people in England “with Arab names.” According to the report, there is no evidence that Canadian intelligence officials sent Rashed money at any point.

Yesterday, CBC News learned that Rashed is not an employee of CSIS. Turkish intelligence said they couldn’t find evidence that cash was exchanged between CSIS and Rashed, Koksal reported.

Earlier today, the Turkish foreign minister said Rashed is a Syrian national working for a country in the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS, but did not elaborate further.

“The person who helped the three British girls into Syria is a Syrian national working for another country within the coalition. The situation is so complicated,” Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters in Ankara.

Rashed appeared in a Turkish court on March 4 and remains in custody.

CSIS’s Syrian asset?

Ray Boisvert, former CSIS director of intelligence and president of I-SEC Integrated Strategies, said the story about possible ties to CSIS is plausible, but there are too many unanswered questions about whether the Syrian man was really a source.

“Sometimes people claim to be affiliated to an organization when, in fact, they are about five times removed,” Boisvert told CBC’s Power & Politics.

Wesley Wark, an intelligence expert and visiting professor at the University of Ottawa, told host Rosemary Barton that the issue is murky — and likely political.

“I think some of this is really about Turkish politics and Turkey pushing back — because it is under such pressure from Western powers to do something about the foreign fighter issue and provide more help about ISIL,” Wark said.

“Canada’s embassy in Jordan, which is run by Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s handpicked ambassador and former top bodyguard, is being linked in news reports to an unfolding international terrorism and spy scandal.”

“The federal government refused to comment Friday on multiple Turkish media reports that a foreign spy allegedly working for Canadian intelligence – and arrested in Turkey for helping three young British girls travel to Syria to join Islamic State militants – was working for the Canadian embassy in Amman, Jordan.”

“Reports also say the suspect has confessed to working for Canadian intelligence and was doing so in order to obtain Canadian citizenship. The man previously travelled to Canada with the embassy’s approval, said one report.”

Putin Missing, slew of military movement noticed – Kremlin prepares for ‘major announcement’

Image

March 13, 2015 – Following the announcement that the Kremlin is preparing for a major announcement the Market Vector Russia ETF Trust was down more than 1.5 percent Friday. All major media organisations in Russia have been told to be ready for a major press conference in the next few days.

Benzinga.com reports:

Alexei Mukhin, Director General of the Centre for Political Information confirmed the rumor, anticipating that “something important” will happen. When prompted about Putin’s health condition, Mukhin neither confirmed confirmed or denied that Putin is currently “incapacitated.”

The Kremlin assured that Putin is in good condition. According to EuroNews, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the President said that “there is absolutely no reason for any doubts about the state of his (Putin’s) health.” He added, “His health is really perfect and everything is OK with him, and he’s working in accordance with his traditionally overloaded working schedule.”

Mukhin also tweeted two messages in relation with the issue. First: “Guys, you now need the president, come together.” A few minutes later he added: “Be brave guys – Putin moved to the next level in your game…”

A few hours earlier, Mukhin had told Pravda.Ru that Putin has no rivals inside of Russia, adding that his popularity would only grow “against the backdrop of increasing external pressure.”

Mukhin then said, “I would not go against Vladimir Putin, who said that he would make the decision later, under the influence of life circumstances. At this stage, undoubtedly, there is no alternative to Vladimir Putin.”

On March 13, Russia released stills of Putin meeting with Russian supreme court chairman Vyacheslav Lebedev. But as the New York Times notes, the appearance hasn’t been confirmed outside of the Kremlin.

This unusually long disappearance could indicate that something is going down within the walls of the Kremlin. But what?

Putin’s absence might have no larger significance, and rumors of his illness or even death could be overblown. But the speculation surrounding his health shows just how fragile Putin’s system really is — as well as its dependency on a single individual.

Even an absence of a few days raises some startling possibilities about what could really be going on in Moscow.

“While the talk is pretty speculative and quite wild now, it is clearly irking the Russians,” Mark Galeotti, a New York University professor specializing in global affairs and Russian and Slavic studies, told Business Insider by email. “If Putin doesn’t show in the next day or so or if all we get are some press stills, then that will suggest something serious is up — and the succession struggle begins.”

“I have no idea whether Putin is dead, but there is clearly something going on that the Kremlin is working hard to hide,” Nichols told Business Insider.

This absence has prompted rumors and speculation across the Russian blogosphere. “Putin has died” is now trending across the Russian internet, but there is no credible information citing what, if anything, might be afflicting him.

This kind of speculation may be natural given the secretive and autocratic nature of Putin’s leadership. “These are the kinds of things that happen when a governing system is so dependent on the image of and physical person of one man,” Hannah Thoburn, a Eurasia analyst with the Foreign Policy Initiative, told Business Insider. “This is certainly not the first time that similar rumors have happened. They happened under Yeltsin as well (although he really was in very poor health).”

If Putin is incapacitated, the Kremlin may try to keep that information tightly under wraps until all factions within the government have agreed to a successor.

Constitutionally, “Medvedev would take over as acting president for 90 days,” Nichols said. “It’s how Putin himself became president in 1999.”

“But no, there is no way the Kremlin would announce [Putin’s death] until all the deals have been cut,” Nichols added.

Israels former ambassador to Russia: ‘There are signs of a coup’

Israel’s former ambassador to Russia, Zvi Magen, told Haaretz he believes “there are many signs of a coup. The movement of the army around the Kremlin indicates that there is a change in government, or that an attempt at a change in government is being carried out.”

Magen believes those responsible for the potential coup are “branches or factions in the army who are working together or against one another, or wealthy businessmen, many of whom worked in these organizations. They could only be people who are free to walk around the corridors of the Kremlin.”

He says possible reasons include the ongoing sanctions imposed by the West on those close to the Kremlin, sanctions “that harm them personally. I don’t believe there’s a controversy there surrounding policy. They’re protecting their own interests.”
